About Maison Grandsire
Maison Grandsire is a characterful 19th-century property that we have carefully restored while preserving its original architecture, history and distinctive character. We are Laurence and Nicholas, a Franco-English couple, and take great pleasure in personally welcoming our guests to Maison Grandsire.
Set within its own private park in Saint-Léonard, just five minutes from Boulogne-sur-Mer, Maison Grandsire offers a peaceful and personal alternative to a conventional hotel. We are always happy to share our favourite places to visit and eat and to help our guests discover the beautiful Côte d’Opale.

The Story of Maison Grandsire
Maison Grandsire was built in 1841 by Jacques Théodore Grandsire, son of Louis-Jacques-Antoine Grandsire de Belvalle, who was ennobled by King Louis XVIII, and grandson of Jacques Grandsire, the last mayor of Boulogne-sur-Mer to bear the family name.
In 1891, Marie Grandsire married François Franchet d’Esperey. Their family became closely connected with the history of Maison Grandsire, which remained in the family for generations.
In 1919, the Prince of Wales, Edward — later King Edward VIII — visited Maison Grandsire to personally apologise to Marie d’Esperey after she was seriously injured by a stray bullet fired by a British sentry while she was in the garden.
Marie’s daughter, Jeanne d’Esperey, married Count Élie de Clercq in 1923, continuing the family story at Maison Grandsire. Remarkably, the property remained in the same family until December 2018, more than 175 years after it was built.
Today, the story of the house continues at Maison Grandsire. Each of our five rooms — Jacques, Marie, Antoinette, Jean and Brigitte — bears the name of a member of the family who once lived here, preserving a small connection with the generations who have shaped its history.
